When Theovision sets out to record the Bible in a new language, it’s not just a technical assignment; it’s a deeply relational journey grounded in trust, collaboration, and community ownership.
The process begins with long standing partnerships with organizations such as Faith Comes By Hearing (FCBH), Bible Society of Kenya, Bible Translation and Literacy (BTL) East Africa, Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL), and Pioneer Bible Translators (PBT) among others. Partners train sound technicians, develop scripts, produce audio tools, and translate Scripture into local languages. Theovision International Kenya transforms the written Bible (in local African languages) into Audio Bibles.
Before recording can begin, deep community engagement is essential.

Theovision’s audio recording technicians begin by connecting with local translators, often referred by Bible translation agencies, who also serve as cultural guides. These translators help link the team to community members whose voices can bring the Scriptures to life. A reconnaissance trip follows, where the team meets potential readers, assesses suitable recording locations, and familiarizes themselves with local dynamics.
We sit with them. We listen. We share meals. We learn their culture before we press record,” says Stephen Omondi – Theovision International Kenya
Not Everyone Who Speaks Can Read
One of the lesser-known challenges in recording Audio Bibles is finding strong readers.
“There’s this assumption that if someone speaks their mother tongue fluently, they can automatically read it well, but reading is a different skill altogether,” says Stephen.
In many places, local languages are no longer taught in schools, therefore community members and leaders struggle to read aloud with clarity and confidence. That’s why voice selection is such a careful process. Every narrator is carefully selected. They are tested on accuracy, tone, breathing, and ability to sustain long sessions. Readers are often matched to characters, for example, an older voice for Abraham, women for matriarchs, and even younger adults where needed. It’s not just about reading; it’s about embodying the Word.

Beyond the recordings, this work serves a deeper purpose. “We’re not only helping people hear the Word of God,” Stephen reflects. “We’re helping communities hold on to their language and their identity. These Audio Bibles will outlive all of us, they’re a gift for generations to come.”
Throughout, the community is involved through hosting the technical teams, narrating and guiding. In some places, community members help construct makeshift studios. In others, they walk 10 kilometers just to pick up Audio Bibles. Once recording is done, materials like timber or foam are left with locals for reuse.

This model of engagement, centered on inclusion, partnership, and adaptability, ensures that every community isn’t just a recipient of the Gospel, but a co-creator in how it’s shared.
But it takes time, trust, and resources. As Theovision International – Kenya works to bring God’s Word to more communities, partners are invited to join this mission.
