What do you do when there’s no electricity, no infrastructure, and no recording studio yet an entire community is waiting to hear the Word of God in their own language?

If you’re part of the Theovision International Kenya studio audio recording team, you build one.

Makeshift studio construction in progress

The technical audio recording team at Theovision works together with communities to construct makeshift recording booths in the most unlikely of places: villages near the Ethiopian border, mountain settlements in Tanzania, and even remote South Sudanese communities. The materials vary depending on the terrain. Where timber is available, they buy 2×2 and 4×4 planks, plywood, and foam padding. Where there’s none, they get creative, using shrubs, scrap metal, and local permission to improvise.

“We’ve built studios with nothing but a hammer, nails, and faith,” Stephen Omondi, Theovision International Kenya

Each makeshift booth is soundproofed to the best degree possible, designed to withstand hours of recording sessions, where electricity is not available, generators are used, or even spotlights in pitch dark huts. At times, the teams run generators for five weeks straight, a costly but necessary choice to make the recording process a success.

Powering the generator to facilitate audio recording process

One might think it’s just pressing ‘record,’ but the process is complex. And worth it.” says Stephen.

After recording, the team dismantles the makeshift structure and leaves the materials with the community for reuse.

These studios have been the birthplace of thousands of audio Bible chapters. But with every new language to be recorded, comes a new challenge: limited equipment, cost of fueling generators, meals and transportation for technical teams.

With your support, Theovision International – Kenya, can scale this work, reaching communities who’ve never heard God’s Word in a language they understand.
