“Just like salt makes food tasty, Jesus makes our lives meaningful.“
It was our first time training among the Borana community in Marsabit County. The training venue was at the Africa Inland Church (AIC) in Marsabit town, North Eastern of Kenya. Our host, Pastor Godana, had spread the word about our visit and so, our arrival was greeted with excitement and anticipation among the group of people gathered at the church. This was the first time the participants would interact with the Bible in Audio in their native Borana language. Participants consisted of representatives from different villages spreading up to 15km away such as Jaldesa, Drib Gombo, Hulahula, Sagante, and Gargasa. They streamed in very early, ready for the training. The communities represented were mainly Borana, however, there were a few from the Rendile, Samburu, and Turkana speakers too. Without wasting time, we did our set-up and commenced our training.
The training conducted by Helen Etyang’ covered broad areas of ministry as follows: (i) how to establish and lead small Bible listening groups, (ii) Leading through the discussions, (iii) simple leadership techniques, and (iv) operating the audio Bible player. After four hours of continuous interaction, the trainees were taken through the practical group session intended to provide an opportunity for them to demonstrate what they had learnt.
During presentations, in one of the small discussion groups, a teenage boy made an interesting comparison… He said, “Just like salt makes food tasty, Jesus makes our lives meaningful. Without Jesus, life might get tasteless and without purpose, like food without salt.”
His simple words captured a big idea: that faith in Jesus brings flavor and significance to our lives. The similarity shared by the young boy about Jesus Christ bringing meaning to our lives, likening it to salt bringing taste to food, is a powerful reflection on the significance of faith.
