Empowering the Widows in Mt. Elgon with Audio Bibles

From a predominantly war-prone area, the Mt. Elgon region is surprisingly one of the most beautiful places in Western Kenya. The rich culture and hospitable communities of the Sabaot and Teso, to mention a few, are truly an experience to behold.

While this region has had a history of challenging chapters of conflict, today it is defined by a powerful narrative of healing and transformation. The widows of Mt. Elgon-women who have transitioned from loss to becoming pillars of strength and beacons of hope for their families and communities.

In 2006, two clans from the Sabaot group of Mosop and Soy clashed, resulting in widespread bloodshed. The unfortunate militarisation of resource conflicts driven by land disputes and political grievances, primarily centered around the SLDF( Sabaot Land Defence Force), a local militia, terrorized the region with killings, rape, extortion, and displacement.

The women have refused to be defined by their circumstances and instead channeled their energy into building a brighter future. They have come together in support groups through multifaceted approaches by gaining vocational skills. These trainings have given them newfound independence allowing them to provide for their families with dignity.

Our team, in partnership with the Restore a Dream Africa organization, came together to complement each other in the efforts to restore hope and dignity to the Women of Mt. Elgon, mostly affected by the clashes. The word of God restores, Hebrews 4:12. We witnessed the hunger of the women when they received the audio Bibles and keenly studied scripture in their groups. They are not just reading scripture; they purpose to live it.

Once a hopeless people, now they have access to programs that sponsor skill development in areas like tailoring and culinary arts, to mention a few. In addition, they now have audio Bibles that most say will always be on during their many errands of the day. While they are tending to their farms, working at their sewing machines or preparing meals, the audio Bible allows them to immerse themselves in scripture in their own native language.

This journey of hope has just begun in Kopsiro, Mt. Elgon, with over 150 Audio Bibles in the hands of stewards and mothers equipped to share the word. With the many projects they carry on, we believe that the word of God will touch many other souls. By blending practical skill-building with spiritual nourishment, the widows of Mt. Elgon are demonstrating that while the past may have been shaped by conflict, the future is built by their own hands and fueled by their unwavering faith in the word of God.

Women and the few men who attended the Bible listening training shared their joy, saying, “We had longed for the Word in many forms, but now the audio Bible has become our teacher—speaking to us in our own language and giving us hope for a better life.” Today, Mt.Elgon is witnessing truth and growth towards a horizon of lasting peace.
