How Audio Bibles are bringing healing to 200 widows living in the long shadow of conflict.
Seventeen years after a brutal militia conflict shattered communities across Mt. Elgon, the wounds are still raw. Many women carry the silent weight of trauma, rejection, and grief, but God’s Word is opening a new path of hope, peace, and togetherness.
When Theovision Kenya visited a widows’ group for a two-day Bible Listening Group training, 200 women gathered, and the room was heavy with stories long unspoken. One widow whose husband was the leader of the militia group shared what few dared say aloud.
“I am still not accepted in this community. I face rejection every day, for a war I did not lead.”
— Salome Matakwei, BLG Training Participant
She raised six children alone, carrying her husband’s enemies like a stone, though it was never hers to carry. Yet in this gathering she found something rare, and she told the group, “In this training I have found a place where I belong, and a tool that I can use to listen to the Word of God.”

“I am blind. I cannot read. But with the Audio Bible, I can hear God’s Word.”
— Widow, Mt. Elgon Listening Group
During the two-day Bible Listening training, there came a moment that stopped everything. A woman raised her hand and broke into tears. She had struggled with failing eyesight for years. Reading the Bible felt impossible, God’s Word locked away, just beyond reach. Until she held the Audio Bible.
These women aren’t only participants, they are community leaders, each guiding a group of 10 to 15 members. Together they have committed to opening every weekly meeting with Scripture in their mother tongue, Sabaot. Listening and healing together.
